Northern Virginia Community Hospital (NVCH) phased out inpatient services on May 31, 2006 and continues to offer Emergency Care and Medical Imaging. Northern Virginia Community Hospital began focusing solely on providing emergency services and imaging services on May 31, 2006. With the change, the facility at 601 S. Carlin Springs Road now provides 24-hour, 7 day a week emergency care under the name HCA Virginia Emergency Services and medical imaging services under the name Carlin Springs Imaging Center, which is open during regular business hours. This transition is part of an orderly process approved by the state in 2002 when HCA received approval to transfer inpatient beds from NVCH and Dominion Hosptials to Broadlands Regional Medical Center in Ashburn.

Northern Virginia Community Hospital is a member of HCA Virginia, a network of locally managed hospitals, surgery centers, and outpatient diagnostic treatment facilities in central, southwest, and northern Virginia. Other HCA Virginia facilities in northern Virginia include 187-bed Reston Hospital Center, 100-bed Dominion Hospital in Falls Church, Reston Surgery Center and Fairfax Surgical Center. In addition to the plans for Broadlands Regional Medical Center, HCA Virginia is pursuing state approval to build a new 126 bed hospital in Spotsylvania County.
