The mission of the Laurie Mitchell Employment Center (LMEC) is to support mental health consumers in maintaining and advancing on their chosen career path. LMEC operates two consumer-run Drop-In Centers in Fairfax County, Virginia. The original center opened in 1995 inside of ServiceSource, Inc. (formerly Fairfax Opportunities Unlimited). The second opened in 2000 inside of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services, Inc.'s Engleside center.

 

LMEC is open on evenings and weekends to accommodate the needs of their participants. Services include peer counseling, support and networking; one-on-one job consultations; computer training; and seminars and workshops. LMEC also offers on-site employment training to shelters, clubhouses and other organizations. The center's goal is to empower mental health consumers to overcome employment problems in a caring, understanding environment that is designed and run by consumers.
