At yesterday's all day (10a-4.30p+ plus commuting time = $25?)
team building exercise/ bylaws meeting,
after requesting that the event not be held in the morning,
and after arriving first (as usual and many times last non paid person
to leave) a late presenter/trainer chosen by new paid 'peer' staff,
and probably with their own personal agenda, unbeknownst to me and
probably most of the people attending the 'training',
tried doing Simon Says, that childish game,
much like the infantalizing provider to consumer attitude and
multiple forms of abuse (e.g. Intrusive: what is your motivation?
and what makes you walk and leave? i.e. deal breakers?, oh and tell
the abusive people your most personal values and decision points? WTF?)
claiming that people not being direct/open, frank and honest
makes meetings take so long then probing for what's going on
in this 'corporation''s dynamics?,
repeatedly asking about the group's mission?
Jumping ahead to later yesterday's bylaws meeting,
when bylaws are not developed by consensus, rushed,
hugely outdated, but off on a bylaws committee then
rammed down the rest of the groups' throat, claiming to be legal,
then claiming to be frustrated by the inactivity
of the other people and that others waste
our time?
Begin Surmon on the Mount:
(stepping up on soap box here)
The chair's role is not to tell people to shut up,
but be brief, and get things done, not what the chair wants
but what is good for the group, by the group, and including
people and hearing people in the conversation,
not controlling and exclusive, imho. More Bullying
and abuse by someone who should have the
experience to know better and claiming to want
a system where people are respected and dignity?
NOT HOW THINGS HAVE BEEN DONE...
/End Sermon/ Soapbox, but not opinions
The team building exercise 'trainer' proceeded to say
we weren't following Simon Says rules in introductions.
Back Up On Soap Box:
The Trainer has no right to tell participants what to do
in a training where the goals, means and purpose was not clear
from the beginning, and something rushed into bandaid
making the group function? In a voluntary organization
where most people had the sense not to show up,
and paid people including fiscal agent claim to not
be part of the group by their actions of not showing up
or being above it all, when a peer specialist? WTF?
/Stepping off the Soap Box/ Sermonizing
A later exercise, paired people based on which chocolate candy
wrapper type was selected (including peanuts which can make one person
violently and possibly deathly ill with allergy). At snack time,
more peanut products were present...
This type of stuff went on for hours, and after a fire alarm interruption
and further blather bled into the time for bylaws
with further meaningless chatter and self promotion.
The person who requested the team building, was not present,
perhaps due to the misinterpretation and lack of say in how the
request was handled and implemented?
Another called in on the phone (the third not to bother showing up,
while others make the effort to commute, sometimes by the longest
and most difficult means, early instead of reasonable times given factors),
and was fairly quickly absent from the rest of the training
following not hearing and being included
in the training by phone teleconference means.
Turns out the trainer is a provider with a masters in public administration
but the attitude was clear from the beginning, and the person selecting
the trainer did not bother to be part of the 'team', claiming to have already
known the material, and too busy? Peer indeed...
One ironic situation was that the trainer claimed that people should
not be left feeling angry, used and betrayed, and other such things
after a meeting. Like a romantic partner, the trainer analogied,
should not go to bed angry, as it's not good for the relationship.
This has regularly been the case with me, (and hence why I 'blog'
and report here on NoVAPeers.pbwiki) and the next bylaws meeting
felt physically ill being railroaded/ unheard by the bylaws /
ExecutingCommittee/ education co chair who steals website money
for his education goals for several more hours...
So when people ask for feedback, you're getting it. So So sorry it's not
what you want to hear, but you've 'earned it' by your and/or other
ExecutingCommittee actions.
After wasting so much time with a broken team, the bylaws
meeting had exhausted people forced to accept things and
somewhat discussed the real mission, traditional officers roles
within a typical legal context but changes were not well
heard, no recently purchased projector was used for a wordsmithing
event, and will see how it turns out?
A skathing review noting scheduling and timing is everything,
respect is lacking and ExecutingCommittee don't hear consumers
in an organization that is supposed to be about recovery, empowerment
dignity, and all that. Another case in point,
this team building and bylaws meeting yesterday...
Nobody cares, the Bullying sequel, ignoring what we are to be
about, by how we do things...
Letters to the editor will be accepted on this and other wiki pages.
As always, not expecting you to contribute, as hasn't happened
in two years, despite repeated ad nausium attempts to give
people ideas and a perspective on what to share with the community
at large, so why expect people to start now when too late?
Beating a dead dream...?
